Purpose: In the digital era, digital libraries have emerged as core infrastructures for advancing science and education through enhanced access to knowledge and scholarly communication. The user interface, as the bridge between users and digital systems, plays a central role in determining interaction quality and user experience. Research in human–computer interaction (HCI) confirms that well-designed, intelligent, and user-friendly interfaces substantially improve satisfaction, engagement, and productivity. Despite global attention to this field, no comprehensive bibliometric analysis has been conducted on digital library user interface research—particularly regarding Iran’s contribution. This study aims to monitor and compare global and Iranian publication trends in this domain using the Scopus citation database, identifying leading institutions, authors, and patterns of collaboration.
Methodology: An applied bibliometric method was used. Publications indexed in Scopus from 1954 to July 2025 were retrieved through a structured search using the keywords “user interface,” “usability,” “user experience,” “HCI,” “digital library,” “electronic library,” and “digital repository” in titles, abstracts, and keywords. After removing duplicates, 3,486 records were retained and standardized in Microsoft Excel. Descriptive statistical analyses (frequency, percentage, distribution, and trend) were conducted, and co-authorship networks were visualized using the Bibliometrix package in R. As the dataset was comprehensive, sampling was unnecessary.
Findings: Global scientific production on digital library user interfaces has steadily increased, stabilizing at around 80–100 papers annually. In contrast, Iranian contributions remain minimal and inconsistent, reaching at most three papers per year. This reveals a major quantitative and qualitative gap between Iran and global research developments. Institutionally, the University of Waikato (New Zealand, 62 publications) ranked first, followed by Carnegie Mellon University (51), the University of Maryland (41), and Nanyang Technological University (35). Leading American universities such as Illinois, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Stanford, and Berkeley displayed strong engagement, reinforcing the U.S. leadership in HCI and digital information systems. In Iran, Shiraz University (5 publications) and the University of Tehran (4) were most active, while the University of Qom, Islamic Azad University, and the National Library of Iran showed limited activity. Even mid-level global institutions far outperformed Iranian universities in both volume and visibility.
Prolific international authors included David Bainbridge, Ian H. Witten, and Sally Jo Cunningham (University of Waikato), Edward A. Fox (Virginia Tech), Michael G. Christel (Carnegie Mellon), Richard Furuta (Texas A&M), and Gary Marchionini (University of North Carolina). Among Iranian scholars, Y. Norouzi (6 publications), J. Abbaspour, M. Mirzabeigi, and S. Rahrovani (5 each), and F. Fahimnia (3) were identified as the most active. Network analysis showed strong international collaboration clusters around Waikato, Virginia Tech, and Carnegie Mellon, while Iranian networks appeared weak and fragmented.
Conclusion: The findings reveal a substantial disparity between Iran and the global community in research on digital library user interfaces. Leading institutions such as Waikato, Carnegie Mellon, and Nanyang have established major academic influence, while Iranian universities lag significantly in research visibility, impact, and collaboration. Strategic actions are needed, including investment in high-impact subfields, fostering international collaboration, strengthening institutional support for global publishing, and developing national benchmarking systems based on Scopus indicators.
This study provides a systematic overview that can inform policies to enhance Iran’s research visibility and capacity in HCI and user interface design.
