Abstract
Purpose: The present study aimed to review and synthesize findings from national and international research on evaluation approaches in humanities and social sciences research.
Methodology: The present study employed a systematic review approach, based on the guidelines outlined by Acland (2015). Relevant literature on evaluation methods and approaches in humanities and social sciences was systematically searched across both international and national databases. Following a screening process, 28 articles were included for final analysi
Findings: The findings indicate that research evaluation in the humanities relies on a wide range of approaches and tools, each with its own advantages and limitations. The identified approaches include bibliometrics, altmetrics, commercialization statistics, impact repositories, document analysis, peer review, interviews, surveys, and case studies. Additional methods include stakeholder and user evaluation, workshops and focus groups, activity tracking, field visits, logic models, theory of change, bottom-up approaches, and the inside-out approach methods
Moreover, the results suggest that these approaches and methods correspond to different stages of the research cycle (inputs, processes, outputs, outcomes, and impacts). Methods such as bibliometrics, altmetrics, and statistical databases primarily focus on measuring research outputs, enabling quantitative comparison of research results. In contrast, qualitative and participatory approaches, including interviews, case studies, field visits, document analysis, stakeholder evaluations, workshops, focus groups, and bottom-up approaches, tend to assess research outcomes and medium- to long-term impacts.
Conclusion: The analysis of the present study indicates that contemporary research assessment approaches, by moving beyond an exclusive focus on measurable outputs, facilitate the integration of quantitative and qualitative data, support collaborative analysis, and enable the application of theoretical frameworks. This methodological diversity, along with the alignment of approaches and methods with the research cycle, suggests that the selection and combination of assessment strategies should be guided by the specific research stages and evaluation objectives to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation. Accordingly, evaluating research in the humanities and social sciences requires the integration of multiple approaches, attention to contextual and procedural factors, and the use of diverse data sources.
