Responsible research evaluation is considered as an important aspect for research policy makers. Due to the diversity in the types of research outputs, as well as the existence of different types of research impact, and the differences between the nature of research and organizational strategies, implementing an effective research evaluation policy have always been a great challenge. In addition, the multiplicity of research indicators and databases providing these indicators, the different subject coverage and scope of indexing of journals in different fields, different publication formats, and different languages and biases in citation databases have added to other challenges of research evaluation. Hence, the necessity of applying new approaches, especially implementing responsible use of research indicators in research evaluation, is of a necessity. This article aims to provide some practical suggestions for evaluating research by reviewing new approaches in the use of scientometric indicators and the current international statements in reforming research evaluation.
