Abstract
Objective: Visibility is one of the most important measurable metrics of scientific publications on the web and one of the indicators determining scientific development in scientific communities, which can significantly increase the rate of citations of research works. One of the research tools that leads to sharing and increasing the visibility and citations of articles is scientific social networks. In fact, social networks are used to establish scientific communication, share knowledge, and publish research outputs, which can increase the visibility of articles and publications by using their performance indicators and indicators. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the role of scientific social networks in the visibility of researchers and increasing the citations of research works.
Methodology: The present article is a review article that has been compiled with a library and documentary approach. The statistical population of the study is print and electronic resources in the field of scientometrics and altmetrics.
Findings: The results of the study show that with the emergence of Web 2 tools, including social networks and free access to various types of scientific outputs on the web, and the limitations of traditional citation-based methods and indicators such as bibliometrics and scientometrics, alternative metrics such as scientific social network metrics and altmetrics have emerged, which are used alongside traditional citation-based indicators to examine the impact of scientific productions in the social web environment. Among alternative metrics or social network-based indicators, scientific social networks are considered spaces for introducing and making scientific works visible, which, like citation databases, provide the possibility of examining the extent of use of a source or work, and introducing researchers' works in them leads to increased visibility of scientific outputs and, consequently, increased citation of scientific productions. Meanwhile, scientific social networks ResearchGate, Academia, Mendeley, and Google Scholar as alternative indicators can have a very positive impact on the rate of downloads, citations, and consequently visibility.
Conclusion: The use of scientific social networks can be effective in promoting knowledge, establishing communication, and scientific exchanges between researchers; therefore, it is necessary that by holding training workshops and adopting new policies by policymakers in the field of scientific evaluation, researchers are encouraged to be more present in scientific social networks and share their scientific works in these spaces.
