In the present era, one of the main concerns of research policymakers is ensuring the impact of research in achieving sustainable development goals and improving the quality of life for citizens in different communities. Focusing on the effectiveness of research to solve social, economic, and environmental problems and challenges through applied research, as well as aligning decision-making with the results obtained from this research, has emerged as an undeniable necessity. In this regard, what is of greater importance is the need to create an efficient and comprehensive evaluation system that can provide policymakers with accurate information to understand various concepts of impact.
In recent decades, the evaluation of research has become a key pillar of scientific progress, significantly influenced by substantial changes and has taken on new dimensions. One of these new dimensions is the development of altmetrics as an innovative approach in bibliometrics, which has attracted the attention of many researchers, scholars, and science policymakers and has become an effective tool in assessing the impacts of research. Unlike traditional indicators such as impact factor, altmetrics provides a more comprehensive measurement of research impact by analyzing online feedback, interactions on social networks, and other informal metrics. This means we can more accurately examine and analyze the social, economic, cultural, and scientific effects of this research, thereby obtaining a more comprehensive picture of the impacts of research.
This study has been conducted based on library resources and a comprehensive analysis of articles related to bibliometrics and altmetrics and addresses the role of altmetrics in transforming and complementing the research evaluation process. The findings and results of this research indicate that altmetrics can serve as a complementary tool, assisting researchers in developing more multidimensional and realistic perspectives on research impacts, especially in areas where scientific and social interactions are examined from various angles. These findings also suggest that paying attention to the use of altmetrics can contribute to innovation and progress in scientific policymaking. Additionally, recommendations based on the results of this study will be provided for standardizing altmetrics methods and addressing existing weaknesses, so that the needs of researchers, academic institutions, and the scientific community can be met, ultimately establishing positive interactions between science and society.
