Purpose: Solar water heating is a renewable-energy application whose contribution to hot-water demand and emission reduction depends on system type, sizing, load profile, climate, and the energy source displaced. Because the literature spans several technical domains, a systematic map of publication growth, citation patterns, collaboration, and thematic structure is needed. This study provides a scientometric analysis of solar water-heating research indexed in Web of Science from 1980 to 2023. It also identifies leading countries and prominent research topics, providing a consolidated overview of how the field’s international research landscape has evolved over time.
Methodology: The Web of Science Core Collection was searched with TS=("solar water heat*") for the 1980–2023 data window. The search returned 2,602 records. The analytical sample comprised 2,342 records classified as Article (1,675), Proceedings Paper (596), or Article; Proceedings Paper (71); the remaining 260 records belonged to other document types listed in Table 1 and were excluded from the main analysis. A Python workflow cleaned and standardised bibliographic fields, merged equivalent keyword forms, calculated publication and citation indicators, and constructed descriptive collaboration matrices. Country collaboration was counted in full, and the 50 most frequent standardised keywords were used for the word cloud. Results were interpreted within the coverage limits of the database.
Findings: Publication activity increased across the study window, with the highest annual output in 2022 (170 publications). Researchers from 118 countries contributed to the dataset. By publication count, China ranked first with 404 publications (17.3%) and 6,274 citations, followed by India with 374 publications (16.0%) and 7,224 citations. The country network displayed observed co-authorship links but was interpreted descriptively because degree and betweenness centrality were not calculated. Frequent themes included solar water heating, solar energy, phase-change materials, thermal performance, collectors, and thermal-energy storage. In the overlapping Web of Science categories, Energy and Fuels included 1,528 publications and 33,154 citations (h-index 81).
Conclusion: The data document long-term growth, broad international participation, and an interdisciplinary thematic structure in solar water-heating research during 1980–2023. These patterns are associations within the indexed dataset and do not establish causal explanations for country performance or technology diffusion. Updating the search and adding network-centrality and temporal co-occurrence analyses would strengthen future assessments.
