The connection between translation studies and scientometric research is relatively new, with limited dedicated studies in this area; however, a geographical imbalance in translation research is noticeable. For this reason, this study attempts to analyze translation research from a scientometric perspective, with an emphasis on the geographical region of Iran and using articles indexed in the Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC). In other words, the aim of this research was to conduct a scientometric analysis and visualization of the scientific network of studies in the field of Translation Studies between the years 1991 and 2024. To this end, 2,930 scientific outputs in the form of articles indexed in the ISC database were extracted and analyzed using scientometric software.
The findings revealed that the most-cited articles primarily focused on the translation of religious texts (particularly the Quran and Nahj al-Balagha) and translation criticism based on the theories of Berman and Garcés. The most prolific authors in this field include Khoshsaligheh, Khazaei, and Masbuq, whose co-authorship networks reveal patterns of research collaboration. The dispersion of nodes in the co-authorship network of translation researchers indicates the presence of independent groups with sub-specializations in the field of translation.
Keyword analysis indicated the dominance of topics such as Quran translation, comparative literature, and cultural challenges in translation. Thematic clustering also identified 10 main clusters, including theoretical foundations of translation, comparative literature, Quranic studies, and the history of translation. The results of this study showed that 43% of research trends focused on literary and religious translation, 29% on cultural/historical aspects, and 28% on methodological issues. That said, one research gap in the field of translation that can be pointed out is the lack of attention to machine translation, which was only mentioned in the sixth cluster. In addition, none of the clusters directly addressed simultaneous or consecutive interpreting. This study, while highlighting strengths (attention to religious and literary texts), also points to weaknesses such as insufficient attention to machine translation and interpreting. The results of this research provide valuable insights for research policy-making and can guide the future development of translation studies in Iran. The results offer a comprehensive mapping of the field's intellectual structure, showcasing both established research areas and underexplored domains that warrant further scholarly attention.
